It is with deep sorrow that the Pensacola community remembers Don Patrick Smith, who passed away on January 3, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on June 13, 1939, in Washington, D.C., Don was the cherished son of Don and Margaret Smith.
Raised in Maryland and Washington, D.C., Don pursued a degree in Art from Marion Junior College. His aspirations to fly were shaped by a film about fighter jets, leading him to join the U.S. Navy in 1960 after a recruiter suggested this path when his math skills did not meet the requirements for the Air Force.
During his service, which included a memorable marriage to Donna Anne Kelson (Smith) on November 24, 1962, Don became a father to two children: son Allen Cooper Smith and daughter Kerri Marie Smith, who has since passed away. His military career was distinguished, serving with Squadron VU 2 and later with VA 76 aboard the USS Enterprise during the Vietnam War, where he flew the A4 Skyhawk and participated in Operation Linebacker I. He retired as a Captain from the U.S. Naval Reserves in 1999.
In addition to his military achievements, Don had a successful career with Pan American Airlines and later Delta Airlines, retiring in 2001 as a Captain.
Don’s legacy of kindness, dedication, and commitment to family and community will be fondly remembered by many. His gentle spirit and generosity touched the lives of those around him. A visitation is scheduled for Friday, January 16, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Waters & Hibbert Funeral Home, followed by a Funeral Service at 1:00 PM. He will be interred at Barrancas National Cemetery.
The family encourages all who knew Don to come together to celebrate his life and share their memories. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice in his honor. Don will be deeply missed and forever remembered in our hearts.
