FIRST RESPONDERS TRADE PASTRIES FOR PHILANTHROPY: ANNUAL ‘DONUT STRIKE’ RETURNS TO ESCOMBIA AND SANTA ROSA COUNTIES
Pensacola, Fl. NewsWK —Local law enforcement officers and firefighters are preparing to drop their glaze, step away from the sprinkles, and mount a high-profile, three-day protest against their favorite sweet treats.
The 9th Annual Donut Strike for Manna will officially take place from Wednesday, June 24, through Friday, June 26, 2026. The creative, tongue-in-cheek fundraising initiative unites public safety agencies across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties in a coordinated battle against local summertime hunger.
The Concept: Operational ‘No Pastries’
The premise of the event balances humor with critical community outreach. For three days, participating first responders will jokingly go on “strike,” refusing to consume any donuts until the community helps them fill public safety vehicles with nutritious, non-perishable food items and financial donations.
Instead of pursuing their usual daily duties, designated personnel trade their standard gear for donation buckets, volunteering as “hunger heroes” outside regional retail centers.
Operational Hours: First responders will stage their public pastry protests daily from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.. They will be stationed at major grocery stores throughout the two-county area.
A Lifeline During High-Demand Summer Months
While the event carries a lighthearted theme, its underlying objective remains deeply serious. Summer represents an incredibly challenging season for local food banks.
“Summertime is historically a period of high demand for the food bank,” explained representatives from Manna. “When local schools close for the summer, thousands of area children lose access to school-provided breakfast and lunch programs. This places an immediate, immense strain on household grocery budgets, making this annual first responder strike a critical lifeline for keeping our pantry shelves stocked.”
Critical Needs List
To maximize the nutritional impact on local families, Manna and participating public safety agencies are requesting specific, high-protein, and shelf-stable items. Members of the public visiting the strike locations are encouraged to donate:
- Canned or pouched chicken and tuna
- Oatmeal and whole-grain cereals
- Peanut butter
- Canned fruit packed in 100% juice
- Low-sodium canned vegetables
- Direct monetary donations (cash or check)
A Powerful Coalition of Local Heroes
The Donut Strike has grown into one of the largest unified community events for regional public safety groups. This year features a robust coalition of municipal, county, and regional departments working side-by-side.
| Participating Law Enforcement Agencies | Participating Fire & Rescue Districts |
| Escambia County Sheriff’s Office | Escambia County Fire Rescue |

Over Nine Years of Measurable Impact
What began in 2017 as a localized grassroots food drive has scaled into a massive, dependable engine for regional food security. Over its current nine-year history, the combined efforts of the community and local first responders during the Donut Strike have generated the equivalent of more than 250,000 healthy meals for children, seniors, and families facing food insecurity in the Pensacola area.
Once the three-day strike window concludes and donation metrics are finalized, the event culminates in a traditional community “Wrap Party.” At this public celebration, first responders will officially break their strike, celebrate the generosity of the community, and finally indulge in well-deserved donuts alongside the neighbors they serve.
