BARRINEAU PARK, Fla. NewsWK — elentless tropical downpours from the remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur have forced authorities to shut down a critical regional crossing, leaving the North Escambia infrastructure grid facing widespread disruptions.

Emergency personnel officially closed the Barrineau Park Road Bridge over the Perdido River on Friday evening as rapidly rising water levels created unsafe driving conditions.

Critical Road Closures

With waters climbing rapidly, officials have set up detours on both sides of the state line. Barrineau Park Road (Highway 196) is entirely closed at the following intersections:

  • Florida Side: Closed at South Highway 99.
  • Alabama Side: Closed at Highway 112.

Drivers are urged to completely avoid the area and never attempt to drive around barricades or through standing water.

Rivers Projected to Surge 15 Feet

A Flash Flood Watch remains firmly active through the night as continuous, heavy localized rain continues to oversaturate the region.

The threat is far from over. Emergency management officials warn that both the Escambia and Perdido rivers are projected to crest nearly 15 feet above their normal levels. Property owners along these river basins are advised to monitor water levels closely and prepare for potential evacuations if conditions worsen.

Power Outages Persist Across the Grid

The flooding comes as utility crews are already stretched thin. Local power companies report that hundreds of households remain without electricity following a violent line of thunderstorms on Thursday evening.

Those initial storms knocked down large tree limbs and snapped utility lines across North Escambia, and the ongoing torrential rain has hampered restoration efforts.

This is a developing infrastructure and weather situation. Updates will be provided as emergency management teams reassess the bridge and river crest timings.
