Pensacola, Fl. NewsWKJune 24, 2026 — Final preparations are wrapped up at 225 East Nine Mile Road ahead of the grand opening of Pensacola’s brand-new, 172,580-square-foot Costco retail warehouse. Doors will officially swing open to eager shoppers tomorrow morning, Thursday, June 25, 2026, at 8:00 a.m..

The massive development breathes new life into the 22-acre site formerly occupied by the vacant Kmart and the old Planet Fitness (which has since relocated down the road next to Aldi). Neighboring staples Dairy Queen, Sam’s Seafood Restaurant, and Wells Fargo remain fully operational, with the massive new fuel center nested conveniently between the restaurant and the bank.

While local anticipation is sky-high—saving residents from long hauls to Mobile or five-hour round-trips to Tallahassee—city officials and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office are warning drivers to prepare for significant congestion.

⚠️ Traffic Alert & Median Restrictions

To prevent severe gridlock at the heavily traveled intersection of East Nine Mile Road and Chemstrand Road, traffic control measures are strictly being enforced:

  • Strict Median Closures: Left-turn restrictions are in place immediately surrounding the Chemstrand Road entrances.
  • Avoid the Corridor: Commuters who are simply passing through the area and do not plan on shopping are strongly encouraged to utilize alternative east-west routes to bypass heavy opening-week delays.

The complex features 830 dedicated parking spaces, but the lot is expected to remain near maximum capacity through the weekend.

⛽ Fuel Center Alert: Regular and Premium Only (NO Diesel)

While the freestanding Costco fuel station is already buzzing with pre-opening activity, local truck and SUV drivers should take immediate note of a critical equipment layout detail:

🛑 The Pensacola Costco fuel station DOES NOT carry Diesel fuel. The pumps are strictly configured to supply Kirkland Signature Regular (87 Octane) and Premium (93 Octane) gasoline.

Why Can’t the Station Be Reconfigured for Diesel?

A digital dive into Costco’s infrastructure and the approved Escambia County development layouts reveals why diesel drivers are out of luck:

  1. Zoning & Underground Tank Footprints: Space constraints on the 22-acre site—which had to squeeze in the warehouse, the 830 parking spaces, and preserve the existing Dairy Queen, Wells Fargo, and Sam’s Seafood properties—restricted the physical footprint of the underground storage tanks (USTs). Costco dedicated its limited underground tank capacity entirely to high-turnover Regular and Premium fuel blends to serve the maximum number of standard passenger vehicles.
  2. Traffic Flow Design & Island Overhead Clearance: Standard Costco fuel stations that offer diesel utilize specialized, wider outer lanes or specific high-clearance configurations to safely accommodate large diesel trucks, duallys, and vehicles towing trailers without bottle-necking the standard passenger car lines. Because this station was integrated directly into the pre-existing, tight footprint of the old shopping center parking lot, adding the clearance and wider turning radiuses required for heavy diesel traffic was logistically impossible without causing massive on-site gridlock.

If you are operating a diesel-powered vehicle, you will need to continue utilizing the alternative commercial fuel stops along Nine Mile Road or nearby Interstate 10 corridors.

💼 Membership and Economic Quick Facts

  • Hours: The main warehouse doors open tomorrow at 8:00 a.m.
  • Jobs: The site brings hundreds of new positions to the area, with standard hourly employee wages starting competitively at $20 to $21 an hour.
  • Memberships: Standard Gold Star memberships are available for $65 annually, while Executive tiers sit at $130. Non-members are legally permitted to use the indoor pharmacy, but a membership is strictly required to shop the warehouse floor and use the fuel station.
