Remembering John Yerg Jr.: A Community Pillar from Pensacola

John Yerg Jr., a respected resident of Pensacola, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 24, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on August 2, 1935, he was a lifelong member of the community, known for his dedication to both his faith and his family.

For over 55 years, Yerg was an active member of Smyrna Baptist Church, contributing significantly by serving on the Counting Committee, the Finance Committee, and as an usher. His commitment to the church mirrored his dedication to his professional life, where he spent 43 years at International Paper Company before retiring in 1998.

Yerg was also instrumental in the local financial community, serving on the Board of Directors for Harvester’s Credit Union for 34 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife of 66 years, Betty Yerg.

He is survived by his daughters, Tonya Renfroe and Nancy Pearson (Kim), along with his grandchildren John Renfroe (Kaoru), Kim Pearson (Megan), Katie Hand (David), and Elliott Pearson (Kristie). He also leaves behind his sisters, Mary Jean Aiken and Bonnie Brown (Frank), sisters-in-law Nellie Gonzalez (Ben) and Shirley McIntosh, and several great-grandchildren including Jacoby, Micah, Eli, Olivia, Kinsman, Ella, and JP. His nephew, Gary DeLapp, also shared a special bond with him.

The funeral service will be held at Pensacola Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. Visitation starts at 10:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. The deacons of Smyrna Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers, with Brother Bill Adams officiating. The family expresses their gratitude to VITAS Hospice Care for their compassionate support during this time.
