Jackson County School Board Election: Candidates Highlight Parent Involvement and Fiscal Discipline

NewsWK — Voters in neighboring Jackson County will head to the polls on Aug. 18 to select their District 1 representative on the Jackson County School Board, choosing between incumbent Chephus Granberry and challenger Christopher King, according to reporting first published by The Florida Trib.

While school board races in Florida are nonpartisan, the contest features distinct candidate backgrounds. Granberry, a Democrat, has served three and a half years on the board, while King, a Republican, brings a background in private higher education administration. Early voting begins Aug. 6.

Candidate Experience and Key Priorities

Granberry, a Jackson County native and local funeral director, previously worked across several operational roles in the district, including school bus driver, paraprofessional, administrative assistant, and transportation manager. He grounds his platform in strengthening home-school partnerships and encouraging proactive family engagement.

“I think parents need to be invited and encouraged to come to the school to participate in activities and not just wait until the kids get in trouble and then you have to go out there,” Granberry stated in comments reported by The Florida Trib.

King has lived in Jackson County for 51 years and has two children attending Graceville Public School. As vice president of business administration at the Baptist University of Florida, King prioritizes fiscal oversight, teacher recruitment and retention, and workforce development to prepare students for local employment.

“I understand higher education, the complexities that it possesses, and the compliance issues that you must fall within, both on a federal level and on a state level,” King told the publication.

Common Ground on Technology and School Vouchers

Despite their differing professional backgrounds, both candidates align on several key educational issues. Neither Granberry nor King supports school vouchers, arguing instead that focus should remain on maintaining high academic standards and marketing local public school resources to retain district families.

Both candidates also urge caution regarding device usage in classrooms. Granberry stresses the need for direct social interaction among students, while King emphasizes the importance of physical books and complex traditional text over screen-based learning.
