On June 6, 2026, Jason Wayne Coleman, a 41-year-old resident of Escambia County, was sentenced to eight years in federal prison due to multiple firearms charges. This ruling comes after Coleman was found guilty on two counts of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.
United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, John P. Heekin, stated, “This serial felon has been a criminal menace to our communities for far too long, but thanks to the excellent work of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office with support from our federal law enforcement partners, he will now spend years behind bars where he belongs.” He also highlighted the prosecution as part of Operation Take Back America, aimed at reducing violent crime.
Court records reveal that Coleman, who has a history of felony convictions, was legally prohibited from owning firearms. He was out on bond following an arrest in Indiana for firearm-related offenses in January 2022. On October 2, 2024, during a routine patrol, deputies from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office stopped Coleman’s vehicle, where they discovered a loaded .32 caliber handgun under the driver’s seat, along with marijuana.
Despite being arrested, Coleman bonded out of jail. Shortly after, on May 13, 2025, he was stopped again while driving a minibike. During this traffic stop, deputies found a loaded .38-caliber revolver in his pocket, leading to further charges against him. This case was a collaboration between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.
