PENSACOLA, Fla. — Hurricane Isaias strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane Thursday evening as it churned across the central Gulf of Mexico, prompting forecasters and local officials to urge Pensacola and western Panhandle residents to rush storm preparations to completion.
According to the National Hurricane Center’s 7:00 p.m. CDT intermediate advisory, Isaias was packing maximum sustained winds of 100 mph (155 km/h) with higher gusts. The storm was located roughly 290 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River, tracking northeast at 13 mph with a minimum central pressure of 974 mb.
Additional strengthening remains possible through early Friday as the storm crosses exceptionally warm Gulf waters. Forecasters expect Isaias to approach the northern Gulf Coast on Friday and make landfall late Friday night or early Saturday morning.
A Hurricane Warning and a Storm Surge Warning remain in effect across the Florida Panhandle and southern Alabama coastlines, encompassing Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa counties.
Key Local Impacts for Pensacola and the Western Panhandle
Damaging Winds: Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles from the center, with hurricane-force winds extending up to 15 miles. Tropical storm conditions are forecast to arrive along the coast by Friday afternoon, deteriorating into dangerous hurricane-force gusts Friday evening and night.
Life-Threatening Storm Surge: Coastal inundation remains one of the primary threats along Escambia Bay, Pensacola Bay, and Gulf-facing beaches. Large, battering surf and rip currents are already building offshore.
Torrential Rainfall and Flooding: Isaias is projected to produce widespread rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches across southern Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Localized bands could dump up to 15 inches of rain, raising the risk of significant urban and flash flooding across low-lying neighborhoods and coastal roadways.
Tornado Risk: The National Hurricane Center warned that isolated tornadoes could spin up starting Friday night within outer rain bands crossing coastal Alabama and the western Panhandle.
Local Officials Urge Readiness
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Alabama Governor Kay Ivey have declared states of emergency across the region to mobilize emergency response assets.
Local authorities emphasized that Thursday night into early Friday morning represents the final window to secure loose outdoor items, board up vulnerable windows, fuel vehicles, and stock up on essential water, food, and medication before wind conditions make travel hazardous.
The National Hurricane Center will release its next full advisory package at 10:00 p.m. CDT.
