🚨 HURRICANE ISAIAS UPDATE: CRITICAL INFO & CHECKLIST FOR PENSACOLA / ESCAMBIA COUNTY 🚨
(Please SHARE to keep our neighbors informed!)
As Hurricane Isaias intensifies over the Gulf of Mexico packing Category 2 winds (100+ mph) and tracking toward the northern Gulf Coast, conditions across the western Florida Panhandle will deteriorate quickly starting Friday morning into early Saturday.
Here is everything you need to know right now to stay safe and prepared:
⚠️ 1. OFFICIAL ORDERS & ALERTS
Evacuations: Escambia County has officially issued an evacuation order for Zones A and B (including Pensacola Beach, Perdido Key, waterfront areas, and river basins) as well as ALL mobile/manufactured homes. Check your zone immediately at myescambia.com/KnowYourZone.
Active Warnings: A Hurricane Warning and Storm Surge Warning (5–7 ft inundation projected) are in effect for coastal Alabama and Escambia/Santa Rosa counties.
Open Shelters:
General Population: Pensacola Bay Center (201 E. Gregory St.)
Special Needs: Marie K. Young-Wedgewood Community Center (6405 Wagner Rd.)
Assistance Line: Need transportation or shelter info? Call the Escambia County Citizen Information Line at (850) 471-6600.
⏳ 2. ESSENTIAL CHECKLIST FOR THOSE SHELTERING IN PLACE
If you are outside the storm surge zones and staying home, treat this as a 7-day self-sufficiency event:
💵 Cash is King: ATMs, point-of-sale card readers, and cellular networks fail when the grid goes down. Pull cash in small bills ($5, $10, $20) tonight.
🛁 Fill Bathtubs & Sinks: Run clean water to fill tubs to the brim. If municipal water pressure drops or main breaks occur, this provides essential graywater to manually flush toilets.
💧 Drinking Water: Keep a minimum of 1 gallon per person (and pet) per day for 7 days.
⛽ Top Off Tanks & Propane: Gas stations are already seeing lines and outages. Keep your vehicle tanks full—they double as AC retreats and mobile charging stations.
🔋 Charge Devices & Power Banks: Charge all tool batteries (use USB adaptors), phones, and LED flashlights. Avoid open-flame candles.
⚠️ GENERATOR SAFETY (Life or Death): Never run a generator inside a house, garage, carport, or near open windows. Keep it outdoors at least 20 feet away from the home. Always let it cool before refueling to prevent sudden flash fires!
🚗 3. LOCAL CLOSURES & DISRUPTIONS
Sandbag Sites: Free self-service sand is available 24/7 (bring your own shovels/bags) at Don Sutton Park (Molino), Travis M. Nelson Park (Bratt), Escambia County Equestrian Center, and John R. Jones Jr. Athletic Park.
Transit: ECAT fixed-route buses and campus trolleys are suspended through Saturday.
Schools & Offices: Escambia and Santa Rosa County public schools and county administrative offices are closed Friday.
Airport: Commercial terminal operations at Pensacola International Airport (PNS) suspend at 10:00 AM Friday. (Check carrier apps for waiver policies).
