Escambia County Parks and Recreation will formally welcome families back to Perdido Kids Park on Thursday, September 3, hosting an official grand reopening and ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of comprehensive park improvements.

The event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM CDT at the park grounds, located at 10004 Gulf Beach Highway in the southwest portion of Escambia County. Local leaders, county officials, and community partners will gather to celebrate the completion of the project, which delivers modern infrastructure while preserving cherished original playground components.

Facility Improvements and Modernized Amenities

Perdido Kids Park had been closed to the public since April 2026 to allow county crews and contractors to address deteriorating conditions across the property. The subsequent overhaul replaced aging infrastructure with durable, modern playground equipment engineered to withstand heavy use and the coastal Florida climate.

Key upgrades at the facility include:

Updated Playground Equipment: Modern and durable play structures designed for children of varying age groups.
Enhanced Accessibility: Pathways and play elements compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ensuring children and parents with mobility challenges can access the grounds safely.

Preserving Community History and Sentimental Features

While the renovation brought modern safety and accessibility standards to the park, project planners prioritized retaining key elements that hold historical and sentimental value for local residents.

County officials worked to incorporate several original components into the updated park layout, including:

The original children’s handprint tile wall
Climbing trees
Airplane rocker toys
Existing swings
The picnic table pavilion

District 2 Commissioner Mike Kohler emphasized the importance of balancing modernization with the community’s shared history at the site.

“I’m especially excited that we were able to preserve several original components that hold sentimental value for many families, including the original children’s handprint wall, climbing trees, and the airplanes,” Kohler stated. “Our Parks and Recreation team has been working incredibly hard on this project, and I look forward to seeing many families and children of all ages enjoy this new and improved park in District 2.”

Perdido Kids Park was originally established in 2010 through extensive community efforts spearheaded by local civic volunteers and the Kiwanis Club of Big Lagoon. The park quickly became a central gathering point for families residing in the Perdido, Innerarity Point, and southwest Escambia County areas.

Maintaining that collaborative spirit, members of the Kiwanis Club of Big Lagoon will participate in the September 3 reopening ceremony, assisting county staff and organizing activities and refreshments for attendees.
