HERNÁNDEZ THE HERO: Cristian Hernández’s 9th-Inning Walk-Off Lifts Blue Wahoos to Fourth Straight Victory
Cristian Hernández drives in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning, lifting the Pensacola Blue Wahoos to a thrilling 4-3 walk-off victory over the Montgomery Biscuits and extending their winning streak to four games.
Pensacola, Fl. NewsWK — The late-inning magic continued at Blue Wahoos Stadium on Thursday night. For the third consecutive game, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos staged a dramatic late-inning rally against the division-rival Montgomery Biscuits, culminating in a thrilling 4-3 walk-off victory in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The game-winning blow came courtesy of infielder Cristian Hernández, whose sharp single to right field drove in the decisive run, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and extending Pensacola’s current winning streak to four consecutive games.
A Seesaw Battle by the Bay
The Biscuits got on the board early against Blue Wahoos starting southpaw Luis Palacios. In the top of the first inning, Montgomery capitalized on an interference call and a sacrifice fly from Caden Bodine following a Mac Horvath double, taking a quick 1-0 lead.
Pensacola responded immediately in the bottom of the second. Outfielder Brendan Jones stepped to the plate and absolutely leveled the score, launching a towering solo home run. Palacios would bounce back from the rocky start, finishing his outing with only one unearned run surrendered over 3.1 innings. Fellow lefty Christian MacLeod was stellar in long relief, anchoring the middle frames by racking up six strikeouts across 2.2 scoreless innings.
The Blue Wahoos claimed their first lead of the night in the bottom of the fifth. Dylan Jasso sparked the sequence with a single, advancing to third base on a Cam Cannarella base hit. Jasso then crossed the plate on an errant throw into the infield when Cannarella stole second base, giving the Wahoos a 2-1 cushion.
Late-Inning Tension
Staked to a narrow lead, the Pensacola bullpen ran into immediate resistance. In the top of the seventh inning, Montgomery’s Gregory Barrios hit a triple and quickly scored on a passed ball, squaring the game up at 2-2.
The Biscuits looked poised to steal the game in the eighth. Reliever Nigel Belgrave allowed a leadoff double to Bodine. While Belgrave managed to secure two quick outs and nearly escaped the jam, Montgomery’s Theo Gillen knocked a clutch single to right field, scoring the go-ahead run and granting the Biscuits a late 3-2 advantage.
Undeterred, the resilient Blue Wahoos offense went back to work against beleaguered Montgomery reliever Tommy McCollum. In the bottom of the eighth, Pensacola’s Juan Matheus answered the call, blasting a game-tying solo home run to dead center field to lock the score up at 3-3.
The Final Frame Heroics
After Belgrave shut down the top of the ninth to keep the game deadlocked, the stage was perfectly set for a dramatic finish.
Brendan Jones led off the bottom of the ninth by drawing a crucial walk off McCollum. Momentum swung further in Pensacola’s favor when Payton Green was struck by a pitch, moving Jones into scoring position at second base. With the stadium on its feet, Cristian Hernández stepped up to the plate and laced a definitive single into right field. Jones rounded third and slid home safely, sealing the 4-3 walk-off win.
The victory further solidifies the Blue Wahoos’ standing in the tight second-half Double-A Southern League playoff race. Pensacola will look to carry this explosive momentum into the remainder of their home stand.
