Crestview, Fl. NewsWK —A high-speed multi-state pursuit ended safely Saturday afternoon after the Florida Highway Patrol executed a tactical PIT maneuver on Interstate 10.

According to an official media release from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the incident began when authorities in Flomaton, Alabama, attempted to stop a vehicle driven by a 31-year-old man from Century, Florida. FHP officials noted that the driver was experiencing a severe mental health crisis and “had made several statements that he was going to attempt to commit suicide.”

The driver fled from Alabama law enforcement, crossed state lines, and entered Florida, heading westbound on Interstate 10.

FHP troopers intercepted the vehicle shortly after 3:00 PM near Crestview in Okaloosa County. When the driver refused to pull over for a felony traffic stop, troopers initiated pursuit procedures.

To prevent the driver from harming himself or other motorists, troopers executed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver. The tactical maneuver caused the fleeing vehicle to spin and crash safely, bringing the pursuit to an immediate end.

FHP confirmed that the driver was successfully taken into custody without further incident or serious injury.

In accordance with agency privacy policies regarding incidents involving mental health crises, the Florida Highway Patrol has withheld the name of the driver and any identifying vehicle details.
