Gilchrist County District 5 School Board Race Highlights Local Educational Challenges

NewsWK — The upcoming election for the District 5 seat on the Gilchrist County School Board has drawn attention to various issues impacting local education. This race features two candidates from Trenton, who are addressing the challenges faced by the county’s small school system.

Gilchrist County, one of Florida’s smaller counties, is home to just two public middle/high schools and two elementary schools. The area has seen a decline in public school enrollment, with a 7% drop reported since August 2024, according to Superintendent Gina Geiger. This trend has led to concerns among educators about compensation and has prompted some students to leave for private schools or homeschooling options.

State Senator Jennifer Bradley has highlighted the funding challenges in the district, suggesting a Local Funding Initiative Request that could allow for the repurposing of $26 million intended for a new elementary school. In her request, she noted that declining enrollment has affected the district’s ability to justify building a new school.

Incumbent Deen Lancaster, who has served on the school board for 13 years, explained that the district’s operating budget is $29 million, and funding is negatively impacted when students opt for private education or homeschooling. He emphasized the need for renovations in existing schools, recalling recent upgrades made at Trenton Middle/High School, which were funded by a $16 million project.

“I think every employee of the school system is underpaid,” Lancaster stated, pointing out that many teachers feel undervalued in their roles.

Charlotte Kearney, Lancaster’s opponent, brings nearly 40 years of teaching experience to the table and has been recognized as Teacher of the Year twice. She has also served as a Trenton City Commissioner. Kearney has secured over $6,000 in campaign contributions compared to Lancaster’s $550, and she has identified the district’s budget and teacher retention as critical issues. In a recent interview, she expressed her commitment to ensuring classrooms are safe and well-equipped for both teachers and students.

This election not only determines the future leadership of the school board but also reflects the broader educational challenges facing Gilchrist County.
