Pensacola, Fl. NewsWK — While urban Pensacola continues digging out from Tuesday’s massive straight-line wind event near Nine Mile Road, hyper-local details are painting a harrowing picture of structural wreckage and fire further north near the Alabama border. A combination of intense microburst winds and secondary electrical impacts left a trail of damage stretching from Walnut Hill to Oak Grove, forcing emergency crews to work around the clock.

Flipped Aircraft on Railroad Road

In Walnut Hill, hurricane-force wind thresholds completely overwhelmed safety boundaries at a grass airstrip operated by Solace Aerial on Railroad Road, located near the Genesis Rail Systems transfer station.

According to emergency responder assessments, an unpowered glider aircraft that was securely anchored down was torn from its tie-downs by a localized downburst. The aircraft was thrown nearly 200 yards across an open space, ultimately coming to rest upside down in a neighboring field.

The same severe cell hammered an adjacent large metal commercial storage building on Railroad Road. The sheer velocity of the straight-line winds sheared massive warehouse roll-up doors straight off their frames, shifting heavy internal commercial cargo inside. Escambia County Fire Rescue personnel combed through the site following the cell’s departure and confirmed that, remarkably, no occupants were inside the facility during the structural collapse.

Explosions and Inferno in Oak Grove

Simultaneously, a separate crisis unfolded in the rural borough of Oak Grove. Just after 3:00 p.m., a large metal residential building and garage workshop on North Highway 99 near Mayhaw Road caught fire during the height of the electrical storm.

As arriving fire engines raced to the scene, the situation rapidly escalated into a multi-alarm emergency. Multiple fuel storage tanks housed inside the active garage workshop triggered a sequence of loud explosions, completely involving the structure in an uncontrollable wall of fire.

A massive multi-station task force—including fire engines from the Walnut Hill, McDavid, and Molino stations of Escambia County Fire Rescue alongside mutual aid from the Atmore Fire Department—battled for over an hour to protect surrounding structures from the intense radiant heat. While the custom metal workshop was completely obliterated, Escambia County EMS reported that no residents or first responders sustained injuries in the blast zone.

Grid Fractures Leave Thousands in the Dark

The structural damage across the north county grid line is matched entirely by massive utility disruptions. High winds and falling trees completely shattered utility corridors along the North Highway 99 route, snapping or completely splitting at least seven massive transmission poles half a mile south of Highway 97. Additional pole shears were recorded fracturing sections of Highway 97 and Highway 97A.

The Escambia River Electric Cooperative (EREC) confirmed that the structural destruction plunged nearly a third of their total northern county membership base into immediate darkness. While dedicated utility crews have braved hazardous, tangled lines to rebuild the circuits through the night, thousands of rural households remain off the primary grid heading into the holiday weekend.
