Remembering George Wensel Estess: A Legacy of Adventure and Service in Pensacola

George Wensel Estess, a beloved member of the Pensacola community, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2026, surrounded by friends and family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Julie Estess, along with his children, Erica, Rachael, and Clayton Estess.

Born on November 21, 1945, in Hollywood, Florida, George was the eldest of four siblings and known affectionately as “Knipper” during his childhood. His adventurous spirit shone early, as he earned his pilot’s license at the age of 16. He later attended Stetson University on an ROTC scholarship.

In 1967, George joined the U.S. Army, where he served as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969, achieving the rank of Captain and receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service. After completing his military service, he graduated from the University of Florida in 1973, where he served as the editor-in-chief of the Law Review.

George dedicated the following decades to establishing a law practice with his partners at Kerrigan, Estess, Rankin, McLeod, and Thompson, leaving a lasting legacy in the legal community. Known for his intelligence, humor, and generosity, he captivated audiences in and out of the courtroom. His passions included reciting poetry, engaging in philosophical discussions, and sharing tales of his global adventures, including biking across the country and hang gliding.

George Estess will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. A celebration of his life is scheduled for Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, followed by a private reception.
