Three children watching pool in suburban street

Pensacola, Fl. NewsWK — A quiet Pensacola neighborhood has been left reeling following the tragic drowning of two young sisters on Monday evening. Authorities confirmed Tuesday morning that no criminal charges are expected, ruling the devastating incident a heartbreaking accident.

Pensacola Police responded to a home in the 500 block of Gerhardt Drive just after 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 8, following frantic reports of two missing children, ages 5 and 8.

Officers immediately launched a search of the home and the immediate area alongside family members. Tragically, the search ended when both girls were discovered unresponsive in a neighbor’s swimming pool. Officers pulled the children from the water and initiated CPR before emergency medical services rushed them to the hospital, where both were later pronounced deceased.

PPD: Barriers Were Up to Code, No Negligence Found

In an update provided Tuesday morning, Pensacola Police Department Chief Eric Winstrom stated that a thorough investigation indicates no wrongdoing by the parents or the homeowner.

Chief Winstrom noted that the neighbor’s pool was heavily secured and fully compliant with local safety codes, protected by both an outer residential privacy fence and a second, internal safety fence directly surrounding the pool structure itself.

Investigators believe the 8-year-old sister, described as adventurous, managed to scale the barriers before opening a gate to let her 5-year-old sister inside.

“Though the parents were good at keeping an eye on her,” Winstrom stated, it appears the girls snuck out of their own home prior to entering the neighbor’s backyard. He emphasized that there was no negligence or criminal liability on either side, calling the event a parent’s worst nightmare.

A Community in Mourning

The tragic event has struck a deeply painful chord with local residents. Neighbors in the area recalled previous instances where the community and local law enforcement had successfully pulled together to quickly locate the children and return them safely home when they had wandered off to explore.

As the Pensacola Police Department wraps up its formal investigation, local authorities are urging the community to lift up the grieving family, the affected neighbors, and the first responders who fought desperately to save the young sisters.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information is released by local officials.
