Trump nominates FL House Speaker Daniel Perez to become ambassador to Brazil
Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez has been nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as U.S. ambassador to Brazil.
That news came Monday via a press release from the White House.
Perez has represented parts of Miami-Dade County in the Florida House since he was elected in a special election in 2017, and has served as speaker of the House in the Florida Legislature since November 2024. He will be term-limited from office in November.

That news came Monday via a press release from the White House.
Perez has represented parts of Miami-Dade County in the Florida House since he was elected in a special election in 2017, and has served as speaker of the House in the Florida Legislature since November 2024. He will be term-limited from office in November.
The Miami Herald reported last fall that members of President Trump’s team had been wooing Perez to challenge James Uthmeier in the race for the Republican nomination for attorney general, but ultimately Perez wasn’t interested in running for the position.
One Floridian who may be happy to hear the news is Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has been in a bitter feud with Perez for more than a year.
After the Florida House chose not to pass legislation proposed by the governor during a special session in April regarding ending vaccine mandates for school kids and creating guardrails around artificial intelligence, DeSantis blasted him, saying that Perez “had a personal agenda.”
The White House is also nominating former Florida Lt. Gov. Jennifer Johnson-Carroll to serve as U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Johnson-Carroll became Florida’s first Black woman to serve as lieutenant governor after Rick Scott was elected in November 2010. She ended up resigning in 2013 as the result of a criminal investigation into an internet sweepstakes company for which she once served as a consultant.
Trump has also nominated former Republican House member Doug Holder to serve as U.S. ambassador to Bulgaria.
Those nominations were all sent Monday to the U.S. Senate, which would ultimately need to confirm them.
