Dear Aunt Clara: Is Year-Round Christmas Lighting a Neighborhood Nuisance?

is it appropriate to leave christmas lights burning outside your house all year long

Shining Bright or Eyestore in August?

Dear Reader,

Ah, the eternal Gulf Coast dilemma: where does festive holiday cheer end and summer procrastination begin? Here in Pensacola, we certainly love a good celebration, but there is a distinct line between year-round coastal ambiance and leaving a plastic reindeer melting in the porch humidity come July.

The short answer? It depends entirely on what kind of lights we are talking about and how they are displayed.

If you are burning traditional multi-colored holiday strands or letting drooping icicle lights dangle past Valentine’s Day, local etiquette—and likely your neighbors—would gently suggest packing them away. Unmaintained Christmas lights quickly begin to look neglected, especially once our salty coastal breeze and summer humidity start rusting the wiring and fading the bulbs.

However, if what you truly love is a soft, welcoming glow while sipping sweet tea on the back porch after sunset, there is a fantastic compromise: cafe or bistro lights. High-quality, warm-white string lights installed neatly along a porch header, pergola, or backyard fence are considered timeless, year-round coastal decor. They say, ‘Welcome to paradise,’ rather than, ‘I lost the ladder after New Year’s Eve.’

If you do decide to keep ambient string lights shining throughout the year, keep a few neighborly rules in mind:

First, check your neighborhood or HOA guidelines, as many local communities enforce strict cutoff dates for seasonal displays. Second, place your lights on a timer so they switch off by bedtime; a bright bulb shining directly into a neighbor’s bedroom window is a sure way to start a lawn war. Finally, inspect your equipment often. Our sudden Florida downpours and humid salt air can degrade cheap outdoor extension cords quickly, making regular safety checks a must.

So go ahead and light up your night, my friend, but trade the red and green for a crisp, warm white. Keep it neat, keep it safe, and let’s keep Pensacola looking charming all year long.

Warmly,
Aunt Clara
