Captain James W. Keathley, a distinguished naval officer and longtime resident of Pensacola, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2026, at the age of 91. Known for his service, integrity, and dedication to family, Captain Keathley leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by many.

Born on October 9, 1934, in Miami, Florida, Jim developed a strong sense of duty early in life. After earning his degree from the University of Florida, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on May 3, 1957. Throughout his career, he became a skilled Naval Aviator, flying various aircraft including the A-1 Skyraider and A-4C Skyhawk. His commitment to excellence earned him respect among his peers.

Captain Keathley served as an Instrument and Tactics Instructor with VA-45, where he trained future aviators, demonstrating his leadership and mentoring abilities. His career included significant roles such as Flag Lieutenant to the Commander of the Pacific Fleet and Aide to the Chief of Naval Operations at Pearl Harbor.

He commanded several squadrons, including VA-37 and VA-125, and held prominent positions within the Navy, showcasing a career marked by exceptional leadership and unwavering professionalism.

After retiring from the Navy with 28 years of service, Jim remained active in the Pensacola community. He volunteered at the Naval Aviation Museum, served with the USO, and was the president of the Master Gardeners Club of Pensacola. His contributions extended beyond his military service, as he became a mentor and friend to many in the area.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Billie S. Keathley, and their children, Lynn Fairfield and Laura Hoff, along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family will remember him for his kindness, sense of humor, and the deep love he had for them.

A funeral service is scheduled for 11:30 AM on Friday, July 17, 2026, at Christ Episcopal Church, with interment to follow at Barrancas National Cemetery, where he will receive full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Alzheimer’s research, the USO, or Christ Episcopal Church in his memory.
