Commander Gerald “Jerry” A. Guertin, a devoted member of the U.S. Navy and a beloved figure in the Pensacola community, passed away peacefully on June 17 at the age of 88. Originally from Marlboro, New Jersey, Jerry lived in several states, including Indiana and Florida, before making Pensacola his home.

Jerry graduated from the University of Illinois in 1961, where he was involved in Navy ROTC, and later earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Troy State University. His military career began the same year, serving with distinction aboard various ships, including the USS Robert A. Owens and the USS Fiske, and held significant shore assignments in Washington, D.C., including at the Pentagon.

Over his 20-year naval career, Jerry earned numerous decorations, including the Navy Achievement Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. His service took him across the globe, including challenging deployments in the Mediterranean and the Pacific, and he concluded his career at Naval Air Station Pensacola.

After retiring from the Navy, Jerry continued his dedication to service and education by teaching Navy ROTC at Escambia High School. He inspired countless students, many of whom went on to serve honorably in the armed forces and excelled in various careers. His commitment to youth development was evident as he helped establish the Escambia NJROTC Sailing Team and coached the high school rifle team.

Jerry’s family was the cornerstone of his life. He was married to Phyllis Graziano, with whom he raised four children in Pensacola. He is survived by his daughters Elise and Suzanne, sons Chris and Dan, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom he cherished deeply.

A visitation will be held on June 25 at Faith Chapel South, followed by a second visitation at St. Paul Catholic Church on June 26, leading to a Mass of Christian Burial. Jerry will be interred with full military honors at Barrancas National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Shrine of St. Jude in his memory.
