Roy Burnice McKenzie Jr., an 86-year-old resident of Pensacola, passed away unexpectedly on June 15, 2026. Originally from Moore County, North Carolina, he was born on December 2, 1939, to Roy B. McKenzie and Ola Badgett McKenzie, both of whom have since passed away.

Roy is survived by his wife of 52 years, Evelyn Jones McKenzie, their son Brian (Melissa) McKenzie, grandson Ian McKenzie, and sister Nancy Burnette, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Imogene “Jean” Adcock and Joyce Doiron.

Throughout his career, Roy was a dedicated public servant, retiring from the State of North Carolina after a notable tenure. He also held the position of Wake County Register of Deeds from 1975 to 1983. Roy had a strong passion for sports, playing baseball, football, and basketball during his high school years. He was an active member of the Garner Optimist Club and enjoyed spending leisure time fishing and at the beach.

Although Roy and Evelyn moved to Pensacola during the last year of his life, he always held North Carolina close to his heart. His family and friends will deeply miss his presence and the relationships he cherished.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Duke Children’s Hospital in Durham, North Carolina.
