Pensacola, Fl. NewsWK — An overnight mass shooting shattered 4th of July holiday weekend celebrations in downtown Pensacola early Sunday morning, leaving a 19-year-old man dead and six other young people hospitalized.

During an 8:00 a.m. press conference, Pensacola Police Chief Eric Winstrom provided critical updates that correct earlier preliminary briefs. Most notably, authorities confirmed that no arrests have been made in connection to the shooting itself, and there are currently no known suspects. Investigators are not ruling out the possibility that multiple shooters were involved.

The Timeline of the Incident

The shooting took place at approximately 1:20 a.m. on Sunday, July 5, 2026, near the intersection of Palafox and Intendencia streets (extending to Jefferson Street). Chief Winstrom, who was personally downtown working alongside approximately 50 extra-duty officers deployed to handle holiday crowds, heard the gunfire and ran directly to the scene to find seven victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

  • Fatalities: A 19-year-old man was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Injuries: Six surviving victims, ranging in age from 16 to 26, were rushed to local hospitals. All six are expected to recover.
  • A Targeted Act: Chief Winstrom emphasized that preliminary evidence strongly indicates the shooting was a targeted attack and not a random act of violence against the general public.

Preceding Disturbances and Unrelated Arrests

The mass shooting capped off a highly volatile night in the downtown entertainment corridor. Earlier in the evening, police encountered an estimated 500 unaccompanied minors and young adults—some as young as middle school age—causing widespread chaos outside local bars and venues.

Officers responded to numerous street fights and crowds actively throwing mortar-style fireworks at civilians and police. While multiple arrests were made during these earlier disturbances, chief among them an individual caught throwing fireworks while armed with a handgun, police confirmed these individuals are not currently tied to the fatal shooting.

“We had about 50 extra police officers down there,” Chief Winstrom said. “Even with that police presence, someone was still bold enough to commit this heinous act of violence.”

Active Investigation

The Pensacola Police Department is aggressively reviewing surveillance footage from downtown business fronts and interviewing hundreds of witnesses who were out on the streets when the panic ensued.

The investigation remains highly active. For subsequent updates regarding victim identities, suspect descriptions, or official media releases from the Pensacola Police Department, refresh your dashboard at pensacola.newswk.com.
