MOLINO, Fl. NewsWK — It has been exactly five years since a violent act of nighttime violence claimed the life of a young Escambia County man, and investigators are once again looking to the public to help break the silence surrounding the case.
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) has issued a renewed public appeal for information regarding the unsolved murder of 21-year-old Shyheim R. Smith, who was fatally shot inside a Molino residence half a decade ago.
A Quiet Night Shattered by Gunfire
The timeline of the tragedy dates back to the early morning hours of June 15, 2021. At approximately 1:45 a.m., gunfire erupted inside a family home located in the 5500 block of Cedartown Road, a rural stretch situated in northern Escambia County.
First responders arrived at the scene to find Smith suffering from critical gunshot wounds. Paramedics rushed the young man to a local regional hospital, but despite the efforts of medical personnel, he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, investigators combed the residence and interviewed potential witnesses, but the trail eventually went cold. To date, no suspect names have been officially released, and no arrests have been made.
Family Seeking Closure
Born on March 11, 2000, Smith was just three months past his 21st birthday when his life was cut short. Known to friends and family as a young man with a quiet footprint in the small town of Molino, his unexpected death devastated the tight-knit local community.
Following his passing in 2021, family and community members gathered for a Celebration of Life at the House of God in Pensacola. Five years later, his family continues to search for the answers and accountability that have eluded them since that summer night.
The ECSO Cold Case Unit stresses that as time passes, relationships and loyalties change, and someone who may have been afraid to speak up in 2021 might now be ready to step forward. Investigators emphasize that even the smallest piece of information—a vehicle seen in the area, a strange conversation, or overheard details—could be the missing link needed to finally secure justice for Shyheim.
